According to early assessments, Harry Potter’s 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will provide fans with a two-hour nostalgia excursion but may feel a touch too excessive.
Caroline Framke of Variety commented in her review, “Depending on whether you’re a longtime fan or a cynical watcher of the brand, this unabashed embracing of bottled magic may immediately excite or bore you.” For those whose allegiances fall somewhere in between (as is the case for this viewer, a former “Harry Potter” obsessive whose devotion waned as an adult), “Return to Hogwarts” manages to unearth just enough genuine sincerity, and occasionally even jolts of pathos, to avoid becoming as sticky sweet as one of Harry’s treacle tarts.”
According to John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal, “What’s all wrong is the relentless self-congratulation that pervades the nearly two-hour show, the actors’ stroking of one another’s egos, and the inflated sense of importance everyone places on the films—they were important, yes, but it’s tiresome hearing it over and over.”
Sabrina Karr noted in her review, “While some familiar names are absent from the show, it’s heartening to see so many of the actors reunite for what may be the first time in years.” Gary Oldman and Daniel share a lovely bond with Sirius Black and Harry, and watching the Weasleys reunite in the Burrow is a true treat.”
